If you’re looking for surfing in Northern Ireland, the Causeway Coast is genuinely where nearly all of it happens - it has become one of the country’s fastest-growing surf destinations, with a range of beach breaks suited to different experience levels.
Beginner-Friendly Spots
Portrush East Strand - long, sandy, and generally forgiving for new surfers. Whiterocks Beach - near Portrush, backed by white limestone cliffs. Castlerock Beach - a sandy bottom makes for a softer landing, and it’s noted as a decent option for autumn/winter surfing (see this site’s dedicated Castlerock Beach guide for full practical detail). Portstewart Strand - nearly two miles of consistent waves with room to spread out. Benone Beach - one of Ireland’s longest beaches, with room to practise; the Long Line Surf School operates here, offering lessons and equipment rental.

Runkerry Beach, near the Giant’s Causeway and Old Bushmills Distillery, offers a quieter surf session with fewer crowds. Portrush West Strand is somewhat more challenging than the East Strand, suited to surfers looking to progress. Ballycastle is generally calmer, more suited to a relaxed session than serious wave-chasing.
